A Community of Scrappers!

Alicia Bull
July 1, 2005

Online communities are everywhere. People have forums, galleries and the newest trend, Blogs. Sometimes we probably get more info then we care to gather but on most occasions I am thrilled to see the world of scrapbooking at my fingertips.

You are here, right now, reading online which tells me you are one of the millions in the US that participate in online communities in one fashion or another. The problem with the internet is the saturation level of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Sifting through the 2,160,000 choices that come up in .07 seconds on Google when you type in the word Scrapbooking doesn’t sound like a lot of fun. So I thought I would share some of my all time favorite places to hang out online with a focus on scrapbooking.

There are several communities out there with many different purposes. There are informational sites that aren’t trying to sell a thing (believe it or not!). They pay for their administrative fees through letting people advertise on their sites. They usually have a gallery, forum or a chat room. They seem to be very open to product discussions and sharing info on availability of products and the least expensive place to find the products.

There are online communities that have all the above attributes with an online store attached. They pay for their site by selling stuff within their store. The community members seem to become very loyal customers to their favorite sites, but these sites tend to be a little more restricted in promoting great deals from another site and like to keep a guarded focus on their own products…remember, that keeps them in business!

The latest community movement is within the digital scrapbook sites. It is called a digital freebie. Many sites offer free downloads or links to other great freebies for digital scrapbooking. They are able to promote their communities by giving you something for free—we all love free stuff, right?

Whichever sites you end up at, there is one thing for sure, scrapbookers are a very social community and take their art very seriously. They love to share layouts and seem to be open to sharing techniques. If you haven’t found a favorite place to hangout online, then I would highly recommend checking out a few of my favorites.
